The Barbados Royals will play its second season under a new name after being known as the Barbados Tridents. The team is entering the season after a second disappointing CPL campaign, as it finished 5th and 6th in 2020 and 2021, respectively

The Barbados Royals 2022 squad consists of retained players Jason Holder (captain), Kyle Mayers, Hayden Walsh Jr., Oshane Thomas, and Nyeem Young, while their new signings include Obed McCoy and Devon Thomas. The Royals also assigned a new coach in April — the former Zimbabwean cricketer and last year’s lead assistant coach of the Rajasthan Royals, Trevor Penney.

The Royals will look to claim its third title after winning championships in 2014 and 2019, although experts aren't too optimistic about the team’s chances.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors 2022 campaign created a lot of buzz among fans, as the team was announced as the host of the CPL 2022 playoffs. The Amazon Warriors are yet to win a CPL title, despite reaching the playoffs every year, including five final appearances, more than any other team.

The team retained four players — Odean Smith, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, and Chandrapaul Hemraj. The new signings include all-rounder Keemo Paul and spin-bowler Gudakesh Motie. Coach Rayon Griffith will be leading the Guyana Amazon Warriors. The team is yet to assign a captain for the next season.

As mentioned, the Amazon Warriors are long overdue for a CPL title. Playing in front of the home crowd in the eventual playoffs will surely help and is definitely going to reflect Guayana’s odds of winning the championship.

Jamaica Tallawahs

The winners of the first CPL edition back in 2013 are getting primed for another year in which they’ll be looking to turn things around. Namely, the furthest the Jamaica Tallawahs have come since 2016 is the semi-finals.

The team retained its former captain Rovman Powell while also keeping two talented batters, Kennar Lewis and Shamarh Brooks. The Jamaica Tallawahs 2022 current signings include Fabian Allen and Brandon King.

Jamaica is going to be one of the two nations without the pleasure of hosting this year’s Caribbean Premier League, as that honour belongs to Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. Nevertheless, the experts are giving the Tallawahs good chances of reaching the final four again, hoping to win their first title in six years.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

St Kitts & Nevis is set to host the start of the CPL 2022 season. It will be home to seven matches between August 30 and September 4, with the Patriots playing in four of them.

Saint Lucia Kings

Saint Lucia is one of the two current CPL teams without a title. However, things turned around in 2021 after the team was purchased by the Punjabi Kings and was renamed from St Lucia Stars to St Lucia Kings. In the last two playoffs, the Kings got really close (and really unlucky), losing both final games.

The St Lucia Kings 2022 team has shown trust in four of its former players, retaining Alzarri Joseph, Jeavor Royal, Kesrick Williams, and Roston Chase. The new signings include Johnson Charles and Mark Deyal.

St Lucia is looking forward to hosting a portion of the 2022 CPL season at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Beausejour.

Trinbago Knight Riders

The Trinbago Knight Riders is the most successful team in the history of CPL, and it will be looking to extend its dominance by winning another title or at least reaching deep into the playoffs. Namely, the team has gotten to the semifinals in each of the previous nine editions, winning a record four times (2015, 2017, 2018, 2020).

The always favoured Trinibago retained five players from last year, including Kieron Pollard (captain), Akeal Hosein, Jayden Seales, Sunil Narine, and Tion Webster. Meanwhile, Andre Russell and Nicholas Pooran are the new Trinbago Knight Riders 2022 squad members.

Trinidad and Tobago is going to be one of the host locations for the CPL 2022. This island country will host eight matches between September 12 and 18, including four featuring the Knight Riders.

CPL Winners

The CPL is a relatively young competition, introduced in 2013. It is also a small league consisting of only six teams. In the first two years, the Antigua Hawksbills represented the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda but were later defunct and replaced by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. Since then, there have been no changes to the composition of the CPL.

The CPL has had four different champions in its 9-year existence. The Jamaica Tallawahs won the inaugural CPL, defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. The second time around, it was the Barbados Royals who won, once more leaving the Amazon Warriors as the runner-up.

The period between 2015 and 2020 was dominated by the Trinbago Knight Riders, who won four titles, failing to triumph only in 2016 (Jamaica) and 2019 (Barbados). In 2021, the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots made it to the list of CPL winners by beating the Saint Lucia Kings in the final.
